Leigh Burton

Leigh Burton is an artist living in New York City. She has shown her work in numerous group shows including the Art on Paper exhibition at the Weatherspoon Art Museum in Greensboro North Carolina, the Fleming Museum in Burlington Vermont, the Detroit Museum of Art, and Henry Street Settlement in New York City. She has worked with wood in sculptural wall reliefs in addition to painting and drawing and is currently involved in ceramics.  The use of different media have encouraged an exploration of her personal language and experience in various forms.  She is especially interested in the sense of place, how one defines where one is and how it effects one's experience.  Rooms and enclosures in nature seem to have boundaries or limits both literal and imaginary that we have invented and  imposed .  Some of these defining elements, like walls, are concrete and some, like relationships between elements, are abstract.  Burton is interested in where a specific space begins and ends and what it encompasses  as one experiences it  both literally and psychologically and how one invents it to make it ones own.
